Section 2: Installing RAM
I have always found it easiest to install the RAM next, before the motherboard is mounted in the chassis. RAM can only be inserted one way. The RAM modules have notches to prevent incorrect installation so if you are having a lot of trouble inserting the module, check it is the right way around. Below you can see a standard SDRAM module with one notch around centre, and on notch off to one side.

While below you can easily see the notches in the RAM module, it is harder to see the raised section of the socket. The easiest way to see them is to look for the break in the shiny metal pins in the socket.

Below you can see the module being inserted. I find it more secure to hold the module from the sides rather than pushing straight down from the top. This stops the module from wobbling side to side and potentially damaging the socket.

Now you can see below one module installed. When installed, the side clips lock the module in. They often need to be pushed into position as well, but little force should be needed if the module is properly seated int he socket.

This system is receiving two modules (2x256MB). You can see below the second module has been installed into the second socket.
